Midland Sail Repairs

New Rig

Midland Sail Repairs is the new website for Suggitt Sails. We are a manufacturer of bespoke racing and cruising sails and sail accessories. We also repair sails for any type of boat from windsurfers to small yachts  and our industrial sewing machines can tackle those heavy duty jobs such as multiple layers of cloth and webbing.

Based in Worcestershire, just south of Birmingham and easily accessed from the M42/M5/M6/M40 motorways, we are ideally situated for that quick repair to get you back on the water for your next event.

We are fully approved by the major insurance companies. Most sail damage can be repaired effectively and relatively cheaply. However, if necessary we can provide quotations for insurance claims.

Bob Suggitt made his first sail on the floor of the  union while a student at Bangor University in 1969 and in the ensuing forty years has made championship winning sails for a wide range of dinghy classes. Our sails have also won small cruiser championships and competed in the Mini Transatlantic Race.

Our activities cover the following:-

  • Sails
  • Covers
  • Repairs
  • Industrial Sewing
  • Rigging/Rope
  • Chandlery

NEW for 2010

Our latest project is the revolutionary Wild One Rigs for the Laser and Topper

If you`re finding the standard rig a bit tame in light weather, try a Wild One

From an idea by Keith Bond, this rig has been designed and developed by Suggitt Sails for the heavier  sailor in light winds and for a generally more exciting performance.

The sails fit on a standard Laser or Topper rig without the need to buy any extra equipment. The extra two square metres of sail gives a sparkling performance in all conditions. Our testers reported that the boat responded well to the helm in all conditions, and that the full length battens allow the sail to twist off in the gusts and stabilise the balance of the boat. The full battens reduced flog when the sail was eased in the gusts and the sail responded well to the controls to power up and depower the rig.The leech is cut a bit shorter than a standard sail which gives a bit more headroom.

Initial trials suggest a Portsmouth Yardstick number of 1050 for the big sail on a Laser and 1240 on a Topper

We are taking orders from January 2010 and the price, including vat, battens, and a long sailbag is £395.00 laser style and £249.00 to fit a Topper mast.

More pictures and reports on this exciting development to follow.

More of the Wild 1

I had the good fortune to try Bob Suggitts new big sail for the Laser last Sunday morning and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

I am seriously heavy for the boat and have been toying with the idea of buying the Rooster 8.1 rig until Bob mentioned that he was developing his own big rig…Wild 1. Bob’s version differs from the 8.1 in a number of ways. Instead of extending the mast he has opted for a fully battened design supporting more sail area high up.
